When watches and clocks were first designed they required the wearer to wind the watch every so often to provide the watch with power. Self winding watches however required the wearer simply to walk around which moved a weight inside the watch, this in turn wound a spring which in turn provided power.

Mechanical automatic watches never need a battery and have proven very popular with watch enthusiasts. Also known as Kinetic or Perpetual this style of watch is often considered superior and prestigious to modern alternatives.
