Seiko watches survive in space


The newest Seiko watch to become available is set to benefit charities, but it is likely that the timepiece will end up in the hands of a wealthy collector.

A Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk watch is to be auctioned at Antiquorum in New York on September 17th 2009 to raise money for Challenger Center for Space Science Education and ecological charity The Nature Conservatory.

It is one of four Seiko watches specially designed for Richard Garriott, the adventurer who spent 12 days on the International Space Station last year.

He wore two of them during his time in space and the other two were worn by Russian cosmonaut Yuri Lonchakov during a lengthy space walk. All of the watches survived intact despite being exposed to zero gravity and radiation.
