Seiko watches fare well at auction


A limited edition Seiko watch has sold for a five-figure sum at a special auction in New York.

The company recently unveiled its Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk wrist watch, which was up for sale at Antiquorum to raise money for the Challenger Center for Space Science Education and ecological charity The Nature Conservatory.

Robert Maron, chairman of Antiquorum, described this as an indicator that the market for rare and collectible timepieces remains strong, reports World Tempus.

"As the world economy is showing signs of recovery, demand appears to have recovered to pre-recession numbers," he observed.

The Seiko watch was created by video game designer and private space explorer Richard Garriott, who spent nearly two weeks at the International Space Station last year.

His trip gave him the opportunity to see how his wrist watch performed in a zero gravity environment where his body movement was restricted.

According to Seiko, the timepiece performed "flawlessly" and did not need adjusting at any point.
