Indian market to be capitalised on by Seiko wrist watches

In plans to take a bigger share of a growing sector of interest, Seiko wrist watches will have their exposure in India doubled over the course of the next 24 months, according to its leaders.

Seiko Watch India head of sales and marketing Niladri Mazumder announced to the country's media the plans following the company's proud announcement that the Indian market was still very profitable when compared to its western neighbours, which have suffered in recent times.

Managing director of Indian operations for Seiko Tetsuji Ishimaru revealed that double-digit growth between 20 to 30 per cent was achievable in 2010 despite sales being affected by the recession in other countries to a loss of roughly the same share.

"Over the next two years, we want to take our retail touch points to 250 through tie-ups with multi-brand stores, Mr Mazumder explained. "We are currently present in 46 cities through 123 high-class retailers."

Seiko was the first company in the world to use quartz power in its watches, creating inexpensive yet accurate watches and flooding the market in the 1970s, much to the chagrin of Swiss wrist watch makers.ADNFCR-2637-ID-19607586-ADNFCR
