Marie Antoinette's watch recovered after 27-year search

The widow of an infamous Israeli burglar has been convicted of receiving stolen property - including a priceless timepiece - after police in Los Angeles carried out a 27-year investigation involving some of the world's most-loved watches and museum artefacts.

Back in 1983, the LA Mayer Museum of Islamic Art in Jerusalem was burgled and 106 items were stolen.

One timepiece in particular - not a wrist watch, but a ladies watch of the picket style created especially for Marie Antoinette in the 18th century - disappeared.

However, California insurance commissioner Steve Poizner revealed that 64-year-old Nili Shamrat of Tarzana was convicted for the crime and sentenced to five years' probation and 300 hours of community service for her role in the theft of one of the rarest and most expensive watches in the world.

Ms Shamrat's husband passed the items on to his beloved partner in his will and 96 of them were officially recovered, Marie Antoinette's watch included.

Despite popular belief, Marie Antoinette is not known to have ever said "let them eat cake" to peasants after learning that they had no bread, with the quote originating from an unattributed line in a Jean-Jacques Rousseau book. ADNFCR-2637-ID-19650281-ADNFCR
