Casio watches 'pre-empted iPhones'

Casio watches have been praised for anticipating some technological developments by almost 30 years.

Bill Buxton, a principal researcher at Microsoft, specialises in touchscreen interfaces of the kind that feature in devices such as Apple's iPhone.

However, he noted that some manufacturers have been including touchscreen technology in their products for decades.

For example, he told the Independent that it figured in a wrist watch that he purchased 25 years ago.

"I have a Casio watch that allows me to use my finger to operate a calculator," Mr Buxton commented.

He said he could trace a sum such as one plus one on the screen and it would then display the answer.

Mr Buxton added that this feature of his wrist watch demonstrates how long touchscreen technology has been available.

Of course, buyers of Casio watches now have access to a much wider variety of features, including calendars for the next 30 years, time recorders and systems such as radio-controlled WaveCeptor technology.
