When Casio invented G Shock Watches they were promoted for their functionality. However, by the early 1990's they had grown so popular that they became fashion icons. Due to Casio being unable to keep up with demand, competitors started to produce their own versions of tough, rugged watches. Casio spotted a market and invented Baby G Watches.

The first Baby G was released in 1994 and was called the DW-520. It was built to the standards of normal G Shock Watches in that it was shock resistant but more importantly it had "cute" appeal with its attractive colour and cool digital motifs.

The glass is toughened mineral crystal that resists scratches and the back is normally screw back which makes Baby G diver friendly.

This is all very good, but the real secret is the internal mechanics. Casio realised early on that the best way to avoid damage by shock would be to make the bits on the inside float, i.e. detach them from the external shell and allow them to move minute amounts. All in all Baby G watches are normally made from up to 15 different parts internally, the various components of technology protected by bits of rubber and separator sections. Basically it'll take some amount of bashing to stop one if these watches in their tracks!
